On Thursday, Sept. 12, the Jordan Porco Foundation presented Fresh Check Day on the Fairfield Lawn from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., featuring various booths highlighting the importance of mental health and providing students with corresponding resources.
The Jordan Porco Foundation started in 2011 after Marisa and Ernie Porco lost their son. Upon learning about the prevalence of suicide among young people, the Porcos sought to provide engaging programming centered around mental health and to utilize peer-to-peer messaging to discuss self-care, coping strategies and help-seeking behavior.
WCSU’s Counseling Center’s booth focused on the “Nine-out-of Ten Program.” According to their presentation, one out of every ten college students contemplates suicide, meaning nine students have the opportunity to help. Students aware of the warning signs can take proactive measures to get their peers the professional help they need. The WCSU Counseling center is located in the Midtown Student Center in Room 222.
The booth for It’s On Us, an organization that brings awareness to sexual assault on college campuses and meets every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in Room 214 of the Westside Campus Center, featured an “insecurity bin.” Students were encouraged to write down their insecurities on a pink elephant card and discard them into the bin, thus getting rid of the awkward elephant in the room.
The “100 Reasons” booth featured darts and board full of balloons. Students were encouraged to jot down some of the ways that help them maintain a positive outlook. Students threw the dart and placed their card where their balloon popped. The board was full of positive affirmation and reasons why WCSU students should be optimistic.
The Institute for Holistic Health Studies, which strives to promote and engage in different aspects of holistic and integrative health, offered Chocolate Meditation, in which students focused on savoring the flavor by achieving a state of mindfulness. The meditation sheet focused on deep breathing, absorbing the aroma and cherishing the experience.
